Power Platform ALM, security and governance

Low-code does not mean low control. We set up the environments, pipelines, policies and Center of Excellence that let Power Platform scale in an enterprise without turning into shadow IT.

Who this is for

  • CIOs, CISOs and platform owners responsible for a Power Platform tenant that has grown faster than its governance.
  • Organisations that must evidence security and GDPR compliance for business applications.
  • Teams still moving solutions between environments by manual export and import.
  • Companies that want to let business users build apps, within guardrails that IT can stand behind.

Problems we typically solve

  • Everything lives in the default environment, so development, testing and production data are mixed.
  • Solutions are exported and imported by hand, which is slow and error-prone.
  • Nobody knows who builds what, which apps are orphaned and which are business-critical.
  • Business data can be sent to non-business connectors because no DLP policy forbids it.
  • Technical debt accumulates because apps are never reviewed or retired.

What we deliver

  • Environment strategy: isolated development sandboxes, a production mirror for user acceptance testing and a locked-down production environment.
  • Automated pipelines: Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions that unpack the solution, run solution checker rules, deploy to test and require approval before production.
  • DLP policies: rules that define which connectors may be combined, for example blocking business data from reaching non-business connectors.
  • Dataverse architecture and security: data model, security roles, row-level and column-level security.
  • Center of Excellence: installation and configuration of the Microsoft CoE Starter Kit (inventory, compliance, activity), plus the operating model around it: mandate, support tiers and a maker community.
  • ALM and security audit: a review of the pipelines, Center of Excellence set-up and Dataverse security of an existing tenant.

How we work

  1. Take stock. Inventory of environments, apps, flows, connectors and owners.
  2. Define the target model. Environment structure, naming, roles and policies agreed with IT and security.
  3. Implement the pipelines and policies. Automated deployment and DLP in place for the critical solutions first.
  4. Stand up the CoE. Starter Kit configured, support tiers defined, makers trained.
  5. Review regularly. Governance is a process; we help you keep it running as adoption grows.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a single default environment a problem?

It mixes development, testing and production data and leaves no safe place to change things. We recommend a multi-tier strategy: development sandboxes, a test environment mirroring production, and a locked-down production environment where only valid solutions are deployed.

What does a Power Platform CoE actually do?

It combines governance (security and compliance), nurture (training and a maker community) and support (tiers for enterprise and personal-productivity apps). The CoE Starter Kit provides the inventory, compliance and activity tooling. See our article on establishing a CoE.

How quickly can we get pipelines and a CoE in place?

For a first iteration we typically target under two weeks for pipelines, CoE configuration and Dataverse hardening, as described in our ALM and governance guide. Scope depends on the size of your tenant.

Have you applied this in regulated environments?

Yes. At ZSE, Power Automate runs under strict ALM governance, and the City of Bratislava solution is 100% security compliant and built to comply with GDPR. See the ZSE and City of Bratislava case studies.
